Thai massage (also known as Thai yoga massage) has been practised over a thousand years. This unique and powerful form of massage is part of the long tradition of oriental medicine. Its origin, however, is not very clear. Due to its geographical location, Thailand has seen many waves of migration of people who have brought different religions and cultures including Buddhism.
Therefore, it's no wonder that Thai massage has been strongly influenced not only by Indian yogic tradition but also by Tuina (Chinese massage). It involves many dynamic forms of manipulation similar to yoga, but also works on the energy pathways called “Sen” lines, which closely resemble those used in traditional Chinese medicine. Its intension is to stimulate the energy flow in the body.
Traditionally, Thai massage was offered within temples to those who were sick, but it's been associated with the sex industry as the number of western tourists increased. Nevertheless, the recent years have seen a revival of the traditional form of Thai massage in the mainstream culture.
